A new team is making technical reviews.
Federal Aviation Administration Acting Administrator Billy Nolen said the agency has taken steps to assure that air travel is safe. To avoid a repeat of technology failures that halted all flights nationwide last month, a new team has been established to review technical changes being made to avoid another breakdown.
The Senate Commerce Committee questioned the acting administrator about the pace of modernization of the alert system that provides safety alerts to pilots which broke down last month, and about recent close calls involving aircraft at the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, an Austin, Texas airport, and one off the Hawaii coast.
Acting Administrator Nolen said both the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are reviewing those incidents. He said the fact there was no aircraft collision shows the safety of the nation’s airspace.
“It is not what we would expect to have happened, but when we think about how we train both our controllers and our pilots, the system works as it is designed to avert what you say could have been a horrific outcome,” the acting administrator said.
